Alginate Rubber is ideal for creating detailed castings of body parts such as hands, feet, and more. It is supplied in powder form in 450 g bags and simply requires mixing with water. Derived from marine algae, alginate is completely non-toxic and pH-neutral. It is widely used professionally, for instance, by dentists for taking dental impressions.
Yield Information (Per 3D Casting Kit): Based on a single 3D casting kit, you can produce one of the following:
3 impressions of a baby foot*
1 impression of an adult foot*
*Note: Yield depends on the size of the subject being cast.
"The Fast" Alginate
This fast-setting alginate is suitable for castings of children’s hands and feet, or tasks requiring minimal downtime.
Mixing Ratio: 1.35 L water to 450 g alginate (Yields approx. 1.5 L mixed alginate).
Water Temperature: 23°C
Mixing Time: 45 seconds (Alginate changes color from white to vibrant pink).
Working Time: 60 seconds (Alginate changes color to light pink).
Setting Time: 45 seconds (Alginate is white when set).
"The Normal" Alginate
This alginate is suitable for castings requiring extended working time, such as group castings where coordination of hand positioning is needed.
Mixing Ratio: 1.8 L water to 450 g alginate (Yields approx. 2 L mixed alginate).
Water Temperature: 35°C
Mixing Time: 2 minutes (Alginate changes color from light blue to vibrant purple).
Working Time: 70 seconds (Alginate changes color to light purple).
Setting Time: 60 seconds (Alginate is light blue when set).
"The Slow" Alginate
This alginate is specifically formulated for large body castings.
Mixing Ratio: 1.8 L water to 450 g alginate (Yields approx. 2 L mixed alginate).
Water Temperature: 35°C
Mixing Time: 5 minutes (Alginate changes color from light blue to vibrant purple).
Working Time: 2 minutes (Alginate changes color to light purple).
Setting Time: 3 minutes (Alginate is light blue when set).
Note: All times are indicative.
Alginate Volume Requirements
When casting objects such as a hand, the required amount of alginate depends on the hand posture and the volume of the container used. Although the hand's density remains constant, an open hand requires a significantly larger container than a clenched fist, impacting the volume of alginate needed to fill the surrounding space. To minimize waste, the container should be only slightly larger than the subject being cast, leaving just enough space for a sufficient layer of alginate to cover the subject.
Calculation Protocol: To determine the required amount of alginate, place the subject in the chosen container in the desired position. Fill the container with water to the required depth. Use a measuring jug to measure the total volume of water.
Example: If the container requires 3 litres of water, you will need two bags of "Fast" alginate (yielding approx. 1.5 L per bag). If using "Normal" alginate, you will need 1.5 bags (yielding approx. 2 L per bag).
Note: Alginate moulds are generally single-use and must be utilized the same day they are produced.
Extra-Strength Casting Plaster
This casting plaster is approximately 8 times stronger than standard plaster (up to 40 MPa), producing highly detailed and robust casts.
Mixing Ratio: 1 kg casting powder to approx. 330 ml water.
Working Time: Approx. 5 minutes.
Setting Time: Approx. 30 minutes.
Yield: 1 kg produces 0.75 L of mixed casting compound.
