Vaseline has multiple applications within the creative world:

Use it to coat hands or feet before making alginate casts to make it easier to release the hand or foot.
If you are casting in silicone, it can be used as a release agent between silicone layers. This allows you to cast silicone into a silicone mould without the materials sticking together.
When making alginate casts of hairier areas, Vaseline can once again help you release the subject more easily.

NB! If you are making plaster casts in alginate moulds and intend to paint the casts later, you must be careful when using Vaseline as a release agent. The Vaseline can contaminate the surface of the plaster, preventing the Colour Fix™ from bonding to the plaster.
