Poetry in Stone: The Jeppe Aakjær Monument
In the heart of the Danish author's historic hometown park, a striking new landmark bridges the gap between literature and monumental sculpture. This giant, larger-than-life replica of Jeppe Aakjær’s iconic hat stands as a beautiful commemoration of one of Denmark's most cherished poets. It is not merely a piece to be admired from afar, but an interactive installation designed to merge art with reflection. Raised carefully off the ground, the monument invites visitors to step underneath its brim, sit down, and philosophise in the very spot where inspiration once flowed, perhaps capturing the spirit of the famous poem, “Ole sad på en Knold og Sang”.
Bringing a sculpture of this scale and cultural importance to life required a material capable of handling extreme structural demands without sacrificing artistic nuance. MakeMake® ConcreteClay™ was chosen as the ideal medium for this grand project. Combining the fluid, sculptable properties of traditional clay with the everlasting durability of concrete, it allowed the creators to capture the organic folds, fabric-like textures, and timeless essence of the author's signature headwear.

Crafting a Literary Icon: The Creative Process
Transforming a historical personal item into a giant, structurally sound monument requires a meticulous blend of engineering and artistic sculpting. To create a piece that is both safe to sit beneath and rich in lifelike texture, the project followed a specialized, structural workflow.
Engineering the Void: Because the core purpose of the monument is to allow people to sit beneath the hat, the internal structure required advanced planning. A heavy-duty steel armature was engineered to support the massive overhanging weight, ensuring absolute safety for visitors while establishing the primary silhouette.
Layering and Shaping: With the structural skeleton in place, the core was wrapped in specialized mesh to create a surface ready for the material. MakeMake® ConcreteClay™ was then applied in layers, building up the necessary thickness and volume required for such a monumental scale.
Capturing the Texture: The unique working window of ConcreteClay™ allowed the sculptors to treat the concrete like soft clay. They were able to hand-carve the realistic wrinkles, the heavy fabric texture of the brim, and the subtle details that give the giant hat its authentic, weathered look.
Built to Endure: To finish the monument, the material was left to cure naturally into a permanent, frost-proof structure. The result is an enduring tribute that stands resilient against the elements, welcoming generations of thinkers, artists, and readers to sit and find their own poetic inspiration.
